U.S. Economy Goes From Bad to Good With a Simple Headline Change?

Editorial. Every now and then we come across news headlines that capture a true picture of the U.S. economy. Then the bearish headline is realized that it is not in-sync with what I call the ‘Kool-Aid economy’, and so it must be recast to paint a better picture so we can think everything is fine.

Reuters, a leading, respected and one of the oldest media organizations in the world published the following headline today:

The above story was revised and with a new headline:

A search engine capture shows Reuters’ changed the 08:56 AM EST headline and replaced it with the new headline on or about 11:02 AM. We went from a somewhat bearish January ADP report (PDF) to one that sounds much better.

The chart above shows that the change in total non-farm private employment fell for the last three consecutive months, coincidentally since the October 1, 2013 roll-out of ObamaCare.

Shut Down & Delete
In October 2013, we caught Reuters changing the story during the government shutdown. Reuters deleted language from Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) intent to shutdown the government if ObamaCare funding was not in the House funding bill. We were able to locate copies of the original story and the changed content and published these findings here under “Important Update” and [Point 1].

During the shutdown most of the media blamed unspecified “Republicans” for shutting down the government. That was just false propaganda. During the government shutdown Republicans and Democrats in the House passed bipartisan bills to fund the government except for Obamacare. Democrat Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid single-handedly continued to block any and all bills that didn’t include funding for Obamacare even during the shutdown.

This is not to pick on Reuters, who publishes thousands of articles without issue. The point here is the media shouldn’t have to re-frame reports to make us think, believe or feel a certain way that is not accurate. The people in the U.S. don’t need a media parent to tell us everything is OK, when it is not. Just report the truth without colorful re-frames. That’s what I thought journalism was supposed to be about.
